Quo Vadis?

A Roman soldier and a lion, with the dormant Vesuvius incorporated. This painting stems from my deep fascination with, among other things, Roman antiquity.

The composition and execution are steeped in personal memories: as a teenager, I saw the film that gives this work its title during my classical education – an experience that has stayed with me ever since. In that same period, during Latin classes, we translated Pliny the Younger's eyewitness account of the eruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum. After 40 years, I visited Pompeii; it was a wonderful experience!

This painting is an homage to that ancient world, and who knows, a gladiator might follow soon. (Also magnificent films!)
